Diet Pepsi - 90210

Description

We start with a black screen with clear white letters on it. Essentially, everything that the voice-over says is also shown in clear print on the screen. This commercial works just as well for deaf people as for people who can hear. A Pie chart is shown with the 56% in Pepsi blue, versus the rest in red. Then, a map of California with Beverly Hills and 90201 indicated is shown. Then, the characters from the show are lined up in abstract blue. The guy on the left (Dylan) has a surfboard. Two more in red are shown for the Diet Coke people. Then, we shift to a shot of Brenda in red and Dylan in blue (with the surfboard). A blue heart is above and between them. We then zoom to the blue heart as it cracks down the middle (representing Brenda's hate for Dylan). Finally, cola is poured over the entire seen and it wipes to a close-up of a can of Diet Pepsi in silver, red and blue. Then, we pan back to see a bottle of Diet Pepsi and the slogan, "MORE COLA TASTE" next to it.

Transcript

Here's something to think about. 56% of diet cola drinkers think Diet Pepsi has more cola taste than Diet Coke. That means if the show 90210 were real, Dylan, Kelly and Steve would drink Diet Pepsi. While, Andrea and Brenda would drink Diet Coke. But Brenda is just drinking it because Dylan is drinking Diet Pepsi, and this week, Brenda hates Dylan.

Okay Brenda is flippin Dillon the finger at the end of this ad. WTF?

Is this Pepsi's new strategy vulgarism?

What is the link between diet pepsi and a bad 90's teen drama? Perhaps it's that diet pepsi is outdated and "so not cool" anymore.
